First, we are told about the insurmountable problem — sin. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) Sin is what each of us IS and then it is what we DO that is against God. Sin causes us to be contrary to God on every level. And the terrible thing is sin has killed us!
Second, Romans continues and tells us that, “For the wages of sin is death. . ." (Romans 6:23) That death means we are separated from everything that God is and offers to us. Also it tells us that our sin receives wages for us — wages we really do not want to accept. Fortunately, that verse continues, “but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” We can not get beyond our own sin problem so God gives us what we need to have life, not death anymore.
Third why does God want to do this for us? The Bible says, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) See, sin has killed us in our relationship with God. The Lord Jesus took the “wages” of our sin — death — upon himself - removing it from us - when He died on the cross. Three days later He rose from the dead. He is alive! He offers to give us that life.
Fourth, Romans further says, “That if you confess (agree) with your mouth ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that He has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9) — rescued from sin and given eternal life.
